Throughout our lives we have all had goals and dreams. Some we have achieved, some we are in the process of achieving and others are just too extreme to be considered anything other than a complete fantasy.
Let’s examine the last group, those aspirations that are just flights of fancy, things we daydream about being or doing but cannot ever see them becoming a reality.
Here’s an example. Put yourself in this scenario:
Your goal is to be an actor or other celebrity (singer, athlete, etc.). You devote yourself to achieving your goal, take classes, hire an acting coach, get an agent and you begin to get recognition for your work. You are achieving your goal of becoming a celebrity. One day you realize you have hit your mark. You are right where you wanted to be. You will never be at a level to win an Oscar (Grammy/MVP) but you are a successful, popular well-paid actor. Goal accomplished.
Sounds pretty good, right? You reached your goal and got what you wanted. But, why no Oscar? There are 2 possible reasons:
1-You have no interest or desire to win an Oscar or other award. It is not something your place value on and therefore it is not one of your goals.
2-You believe the Oscar is somehow out of your reach. You have placed a limitation on how successful you can be. You have decided that you are not good enough or do not deserve to win that Oscar. Industry “experts” or those in the know may have told you that you don’t have what it takes to win that award but you must choose to believe them. You set the limitation, “I’m just not Oscar winner material so no point in making winning an Oscar one of my goals.”
This is how most of us go through life, dreaming big but not big enough. We stop ourselves short of the ultimate dream because we believe it is not possible for us to reach it. We create limiting beliefs for ourselves that keep us from setting that amazing, daring goal. These limitations protect us from the consequences of failure/success, not being deserving, not being good enough or judgement of others.
The good news is, you have set the limitations so you can remove them. It is not always easy because often we don’t know what our limiting beliefs or patterns are, if we did we probably wouldn’t keep them around.
