Think Positive, Sleep Positive

How many times has this happened to you, you get settled into to bed hoping for a good nights’ sleep only to lie awake thinking of your “to do” list, problems, and worries? “Monkey mind”, as it is often called, can wreck a nights’ sleep.

Luckily, there is a way to stop monkey mind before it starts. Before bed, take a few moments to list the good things that you experienced during your day. Making this list allows you to focus your mind on positive thoughts. Focusing on the positive redirects your monkey mind away from your sleep stealing thoughts and puts you in a more relaxed state of mind. These peaceful happy thoughts can lead to better more restful sleep. In addition, focusing on the positive before bedtime ensures you wake up with a more positive mindset the following morning leading to a better more productive day.

Tonight before going to bed:

Your list could include things like:

  • Traffic was lighter than normal
  • Your kids did the dishes without being told
  • Your work meeting was productive
  • You received a compliment about your beautiful smile
  • You heard your favorite song on the radio
  • You achieved a personal best at the gym
  • The sun was shining
  • You saw someone do something kind for another person

Or anything else you can think of that makes you feel good today.

Give it a try for the next week and see how you feel.

What Do YOU Deserve?

When working with clients (and even with myself), I find one of the biggest blockages to successfully achieving our goals is that we do not truly believe we deserve them.

Many of us seem to suffer from what I like to call, Who Do You Think You Are Syndrome.

For example, you say, “I want financial freedom” or “I want to be a millionaire.” But then you start thinking:

“Who do you think you are? You’re no Bill Gates!”

“Who do you think you are? You’re not smart, creative, well connected, etc. enough to become a millionaire.”

“Who do you think you are? Your family never had money.”

OR

You want to lose some weight, but then those thoughts creep in:

“Who do you think you are? You’ve always been overweight.”

“Who do you think you are? Your whole family is fat.”

“Who do you think you are? You can’t exercise 3 days a week.”

Somewhere though our life we have created a belief that we don’t deserve to be wealthy, healthy, loved, happy, have a job we enjoy, and so on. So we dream big, but never achieve that dream because after all we don’t deserve it (or so we tell ourselves).

The best way I have found to start dissolving this belief is with a little exercise designed to remind us we are deserving of EVERYTHING we desire. Here’s how it works:

Every day for the next 2 weeks (or longer) set a timer for 3 minutes. During that 3 minute period write down everything you think you deserve, from the littlest molecule of oxygen to $100,000,000. Write down anything that pops into your head, don’t think about it and do not dismiss it. It came to you for a reason. You may find this exercise a little tough the first few days, especially if you have a significant case of Who Do You Think You Are Syndrome, but I assure you it will get easier each day.

To help you get started here are a few ideas:

  • I deserve to be wealthy.
  • I deserve to be loved.
  • I deserve to live in a safe neighborhood.
  • I deserve healthy food.
  • I deserve the time to take care of myself
  • I deserve to be happy.
  • I deserve a Ferrari.
  • I deserve respect.
  • I deserve to treat others as I want to be treated.
  • I deserve career I love.
  • There are literally 1000s of things you deserve, take the time each day to write them down. See how creative you can get. Have fun, enjoy taking the time for yourself, and most of all BELIEVE you deserve all good things!

    Thank You Thursday

    Make a list of 10 (or more) things you said, ¬†“thank you”, for today.

    Remember to include the more mundane things like: getting all green lights on your morning commute, not spilling your coffee while carrying 5 other things, finding your favorite pen under the seat of your car, and remembering to renew your gym membership on time.  These things may seems silly and trite but little things like these make up the bulk of our day, so why not express gratitude for each and every one?

    Thought of the Day – 11-14-14

    Recently, someone asked me why I did not include comments or reflections about what each Thought of the Day quote represented or what it meant to me.

    In general, I select the Thought of the Day at random. Occasionally, I will see a quote I feel is poignant to what is going on around me but often I simply see a quote I like and use it. Sometimes the mood strikes me to use a quotation from a particular person and I will seek out a quote from that person.

    The main objective of the Thought of the Day post is not to tell you what I am thinking about nor is it to tell you what to think or feel but rather to stimulate your mind and get you to reflect on your own thoughts. My goal is to motivate and inspire you while encouraging your mind to learn and grow in its own direction.

    The media, our jobs and often our friends and family dictate what we should think and feel so that we can “fit in”, build a career, develop relationships, and be considered a valuable member of society. The Thought of the Day can be a “safe” place for you to express either to yourself or through the Comments section your truest, deepest thoughts and emotions.

    I hope you enjoy the posts and allow them to stimulate your own thoughts.
