Chocolate Mint Smoothie

  • There is nothing quite like a scoop of mint chocolate ice cream on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, ice cream is not the healthiest way to relax and cool off.
  • This recipe combines delicious chocolate protein with cooling mint for a tasty and healthy summer treat.
  • Not only do the mint leaves pack a powerful antioxidant punch, but mint also helps improve digestion, boost liver function, and lower body temperature (yep, eating mint actually makes you cool)!
  • The avocado adds a creamy consistency while providing a healthy dose of fat!
  • I love this smoothie after a long day in the heat when I need some nutrition but don’t feel like eating a meal.
  • Chocolate Mint Protein Smoothie

    Ingredients:

2 cups organic spinach (or kale if you like stronger greens)

  • 1-1/2 cup milk (unsweetened almond or coconut work great, but you can use nonfat dairy milk if you prefer; water works too)
  • 1 cup ice (more or less, for desired thickness)
  • ½ avocado, pit and skin removed
  • 1 scoop Chocolate PureTrim Mediterranean Wellness Shakes*
  • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves, rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs
  • Directions:
    • Combine all ingredients in a power blend per and blend until smooth.
Sit back, cool off, and enjoy!

*PureTrim shakes contain 21 grams of vegan protein, antioxidants, a blend of essential fatty acids, probiotics, and less than 8 grams of net carbs. Oh yeah, and they actually taste great too! Order yours now!

Give Your Liver Some Post-holiday Love

The liver is the largest internal organ.  It is responsible for a multitude of functions including: the regulation of glycogen stores (that’s your energy storage), protein synthesis, the production of hundreds of hormones and enzymes, regulation of cholesterol levels, and the removal of toxins and heavy metals.

With a healthy liver you feel energetic, strong, focused, and in tip-top shape.

The holiday season can take its toll on your liver. Alcohol, fatty foods, sugar, over-processed treats can and caffeine can overtax our liver, leaving us feeling less than our best.

So what are some signs of a toxic liver?

    1. Fatigue – We all get a little tired now and then.  But, if you are waking up every morning feeling tired, drained, and more exhausted than the day before, an overburdened liver could be to blame.
    2. High cholesterol – The liver regulates the production and elimination of cholesterol. The liver is in charge of it’s production and it does a good job of it.  However, we try to “help” the liver do its job when we eat foods high in saturated fats and triglycerides. When we ingest too much cholesterol the liver cannot filter it out of the blood fast enough and it builds in our arteries.
    3. Digestive issues – Liver aids digestion by producing a variety of enzymes necessary for the breakdown of protein, fats, and carbohydrates.  When the liver is not functioning properly it can result in abdominal bloating, indigestion, gas and bowel disorders.  The inability to lose weight is also a side effect of a sluggish liver.
    4. Blood sugar issues – If you frequently feel irritable, confused, or slightly nauseous if you wait too long between meals or if you have signs of high blood sugar, your liver may be part of the problem.  The liver regulates the storage and release of glucose into the blood.  Release too little and you feel weak and shakey.  Release too much and blood sugar levels rise leaving you feeling thirsty, tired, and at risk for diabetes.
    5. Weak immune system – The liver supports the immune system by storing lymphocytes and killer cells which protect against dangerous invaders, and heals wounds by making the clotting factors in your blood.  If you get sick easily the cause could be a toxic liver.

A toxic liver can also cause mood changes, premature aging, foggy thinking, and stiff, achy muscles and joints.

Some of these ailments can be caused by more serious conditions so if you have one or more of these symptoms it might be best to visit your doctor for a checkup.

However, if you have an otherwise clean bill of health you may just need to detoxify your liver.

    How to detoxify the liver

    • Reduce your exposure to pollutants, cigarette smoke, fertilizers, preservatives, dyes, and alcohol.
    • Increase your intake of raw fruits, vegetables, and legumes as well as healthy fats.
    • Decrease the amount of meat you eat.
    • Drink ½-1 gallon of water per day.
    • Exercise 4-5 days per week.
    • Do a liver cleanse.  Liver cleanses are often a protocol of various herbs and nutrients designed to clean the liver. My favorite herbal cleanse is Puretrim’s Livermaster.

Taking the time to detoxify your liver can help you look and feel your best physically and mentally as well as aid in the prevention of some diseases.  Just a few easy adjustments to your daily routine and diet can make the difference between feeling your best or feeling tired and sick.

    Drink Your Vitamins!

If you are like many of my clients, you find getting enough vitamins and minerals a struggle.  Office meetings, business trips, the kids’ soccer practice, and even the gym can make finding the time to eat nutrient-packed meals a challenge.  Thankfully, a busy schedule doesn’t mean you can’t get your vitamins and minerals.

These days, most vitamins can be taken in various forms and luckily enough a lot of them can be purchased as liquid vitamins.  For example, you can get vitamin C in liquid form, (such as Dynamic Health Laboratories Citrus Vitamin C 1000 mg Liquid with Rose Hips, 16 Fluid Ounce)  very easily from a multitude of vitamin venders both at your local pharmacy and online distributors.  There are also several variations of such things as anti aging vitamins available to you as a liquid. Now you can start regaining that healthy body and youthful look without choking on pills.  You might think that this approach is unique and consequently more expensive than buying a vitamin pill, but you would be wrong.

Liquid vitamins are no strangers to the health supplement market and new methods of creation have allowed purveyors of these wonderful health supplement products to make them available at extremely reasonable prices.  Yes, you can buy discount vitamins that come in liquid form without having to scour the world over to find and break your wallet when you do actually find them.  So no, you don’t have to take a pill to take a vitamin.

My favorite liquid vitamin is PureTrim’s Daily Complete.  This blend of 243 vitamins, minerals, and nutrients can help boost energy, reduce stress, and support healthy joints.  You only need 1 ounce of Daily Complete each day to reap the rewards.  AND it tastes good too!

I have been using Daily Complete for 2 years and I love not having oodles of vitamin bottles clogging up my pantry.

But, don’t take my word for it, check out this video from PureTrim for additional information:

How to Stay Healthy this Cold and Flu Season

Welcome to cold and flu season!  This year is shaping up to be a doozy!

So what can you do to protect yourself and your family from getting sick?

Here are a few tips to keep you healthy this season:

    1. Wash your hands – Everything we touch is likely to have germs on it from the pen at the grocery store, to the treadmill at the gym, to your office keyboard.  Prevent spreading these germs from place to place by washing your hands frequently and effectively.  Wash your hands with hot water and soap (it does not need to be antibacterial) for at least 20 seconds to ensure your have removed all germs from your skin.  And while we are talking about your hands, keep them away from your nose, mouth, and eyes as this is the primary way germs enter the body.
    2. Take a probiotic – While probiotics are often thought of as being solely for the digestive system a good probiotic can stimulate the immune system as well.  Puretrim’s SyngeryDefense or Global Healing Center’s Latero-Flora both contain probiotics to support the immune system.
    3. Go for a run – or engage in some other form of aerobic exercise.  The increased blood flow sends disease fighting cells through the body at a faster rate allowing the cells to “find and destroy” illness causing germs sooner.  An increase in breathing rate can help flush germs from the lungs preventing respiratory illnesses.  Finally, the temporary increase in body temperature can prevent the overgrowth of bacteria in the body.  Aim for 20-30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise 3-4 days per week.
    4. Eat your fruits and veggies – Phytonutrients found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes have  been shown to increase activity of T-cells which fight off disease as well as help protect lymphocytes from damage keeping the immune system working at optimum levels.  Adding citrus fruits, oregano, berries, dark leafy greens, tea (black or green), apples and walnuts to a healthy diet plan will provide the phytonutrients necessary to support your immune system.
    5. Stay away from sick people – Encourage friends, coworkers and family to stay home while they are sick, especially if they have a fever, to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses that cause colds and the flu.  If you do come in contact with someone who is ill advise them to cough or sneeze into a tissue to prevent germs from congregating on their hands.
    6. Don’t recycle – Reduce, recycle, reuse is great for laundry bottles and ketchup jars but not for tissues.  Use a tissue once then throw it way.  Don’t keep it in your pocket or sleeve to use again later.  This will keep germs from spreading from your pocket, to your hands, to the door handle at the bank.
    7. Get your beauty sleep – Sleep deprivation decreases the levels of T-cells in the blood while increasing inflammation causing cytokines both of which have a negative effect on the immune system.  While everyone’s need for sleep is slightly different try to get 6-8 hours of sleep each night.
    8. Try adding colloidal silver to your supplement plan – For centuries silver has been used to fight infections due to bacteria, viruses and fungi.  It was used as an antibiotic prior to the introduction of prescription antibiotics as well as an antiseptic for wounds.  Silver interrupts the life cycle of pathogens thereby preventing them from reproducing and causing illness.  Colloidal silver is available in various strengths and dosage instructions should be followed to prevent a side effects including argyria which results in the skin or eyes turning blue or grey.  It can also impact the effectiveness of prescription medications such as thyroid medications and prescription antibiotics.  For more information on colloidal silver visit Global Healing Center’s blog page.

Through proper diet, exercise and rest as well as washing your hands and paying attention to what you touch you can keep your immune system strong and stay healthy and happy this cold and flu season.
